Paul. Point taken and I appreciate your comment. On reflection re Sentamu’s comments – perhaps there are far more important issues about which he should be thinking to do with the Gospel and spiritual needs.

Graham. I didn’t mean to attack you. What concerns me is that Sentamu is not articulating the same argument as you. I agree in the requirement to pay tax. Sentamu appears to state that structuring your affairs to minimise your tax bill is to disobey Jesus’ command. I was trying to emphasise that this is a wrong interpretation of the text and we cannot from that text find any comment on whether tax avoidance is right or wrong. While I am here though how on earth did Sentamu manage to mix up paying taxes and tithing?

Its been obvious to me for a while now that the AMO is one of the main drivers of the UK weather patterns, particularly with regards to summer rainfall. It was persistently negative through the 60s and 70s, resulting in long hot summers (of many older peoples youth), turning persistently positive around the millenium, resulting in damper summers thereafter. This pattern looks likely to persist for another few years, so damp summers may indeed be around for a while yet.

And this prediction comes to you from me with the assistance of £0 of taxpayers money and no supercomputers whatsoever.

The EU becomes daily more like a madhouse. That the Canadians have found one part of the (expensive) EU bureaucracy can’t agree with another comes as no surprise.

An orderly exit under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty is the way ahead for this nation, coincident with whatever unilateral trade agreements we can reach. What a tragedy that none of our elected representatives, or those aspiring to become such, seem to be offering this.

I remember “Commonwealth Preference” in trade with Canada and other Commonwealth nations. I’m not so sure they’d be all that interested now, after the way Wilson & Heath shredded the official commercial relations back in the 1970′s, in their zeal to get into the Common Market.

Paul please re-read my post. That is not what I said and it is a distortion of the actual text. I referred to “legitimate taxes” to be paid to government.

With its collective skill set stuck firmly within the remit of how to bleed the expenses system dry, another veil of office falls from the EU. Over-regulation, the ability to hose money away without trace and mis-manage everything (but debt and unemployment growth) does not make them competent to run a bath, let alone international trade agreements.

Not sure how to check this but I am 99% certain that the UK already has a full-fat trade agreement in place with Canada. So this is another case of the EU screwing up something we already have. We can add that to the list of: Fishing, farming, sovereignty, stability, democracy, constitution, a full working legal system, energy security, etc.

Think we should make a deal on behalf of the Commomwealth. Then if EU kick us out thats up to them. Worth a try i think. After all there are plenty of EU States who don’t follow the EU code book already.

Actually re-reading the BBC article, the BBC are placing the comments in context and he may well be talking of evasion when he quotes Jesus. But clearly the rest is ill thought out tosh.

Sorry Graham. I have to disagree with your comment. Jesus didn’t say “render unto Caesar what is Caesars’ – and extra on top” – tax avoidance is not even covered by Jesus and cannot be used to imply an immorality in seeking to minimise your tax bill. (I am a Christian BTW – and I fully appreciate that all authority is put there by God, however, we are obliged to obey the law and pay taxes, from what I can tell tax avoiders – as opposed to evaders – are doing precisely that).

Well articulated AM. When you try and “moralise” about something that is basically a technical issue you know the argument is lost. Governments have made these rules, and its no good them then seeking to correct their mistakes by invoking “morals”. Just where would it end?
