David Frum shreds Cameron’s Turkey speech

David Frum writing in Canada’s National Post says:

The slap at Israel was bad – the failure to condemn the Hamas government in Gaza even worse – but the real evil in British Prime Minister David  Cameron’s speech in Ankara was the way in which it fed Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s delusions of grandeur.

Not only did Cameron make false assertions about Israel and Gaza, but as Frum points out, Cameron’s fact checking about Turkey was wrong too.  It seems that Cameron will continue to just make things up to suit his audience. You can read the piece in full here.

I was going to say he was the only one doing this – making policy on the run to suit the audience but Gillard in Australia is doing the same. She might lose. I wonder how we can deal with Cameron.

David Frum shreds nothing! While Cameron was clearly talking up his hosts he was correct in all areas he covered principally in terms of Turkey’s loyalty and reliability in western security alliances and the fact that Turkey is a vigorous, dynamic and forward thinking country. His criticism of Israel was also correct and the denigration of Turkey by Israel started long before the flotilla was attacked on its way to Gaza. Israel has been foolish to insult an old friend…the EU is doing the same.

Vigorous, dynamic and forward thinking? Making money from its unique trading geography does not excuse it from its failings in human rightsa and democracy.

Turkey’s leaders doing to the Kurds and the PKK nothing less than Israel are doing to Hamas, yet there is a complete absence of criticism about that. Why the lauding of Turkey and condemnation of Israel, I wonder?
