A bit of fun over at The Waspsnet as Wasp shares an image that has been doing the rounds on Twitter, poking fun at the standing joke that is American ability (or lack thereof) in geography.
But a more careful look at the image begs a serious question. Can anyone else spot what’s missing from the map? It’s enough to make one wonder where CNN sources its digital maps. The Guardian, or Hamas perhaps?
AM: Being a young lass and having suffered what no doubt amounts to present day education, one may forgive her perhaps for mixing-up Tripoli, Lebanon and Tripoli, Libya.
Yes, that really is Tripoli – just the wrong one.
No, it’s not anyhing to do with her WfW. Being on the phone from Tripoli as the graphic shows, means it was the studio team in the US who put the map into the visual.
Has no one spotted what’s missing from the map?
Israel, of course. Earlier comment was too slow – hope this one is timely.
How about israel – which is why the map came from Hamas or its mouthpiece on earth the grauniad
Oh Sorry Israel its been absorbed by the Lebanon
Fred got in first. Shall have to think of a prize now…

I like your thinking TBF :)
But he has to go wearing a Star of David Jacket ok.?
It’s rather srange as israels borders are clearly visible, even the “borders” to the west bank, yet it is the only country not named. CNN isn’t exactly known as friendly to the jewish so it’s hardly surprising…
You mean apart from the fact that they have Tripoli in Beirut? Oh, and they seem to have lost Israel altogether …
Your second point, Gray Monk.
The twitter link is quite good as it’s called Twitpic! (a lucky coincidence)
Makes one wonder if the illustrious post-modern cartographers at CNN have been taking lessons from the pages of the “hidden in plain sight” illustrative post-modern iconographers in the field of “climate science”, doesn’t it?!
Absorbed by Jordan, not Lebanon.
Israel missing? No great loss…
The large error in geo-location for Triploi with regard to the intended locale in Libya is bad enough. The additional error of not even realising the Lebanese Tripoli was different to the Libyan one just makes it all the more pathetic.
They could have confused it with any number of other Tripolis around the region, but what would have been hysterical is if they had pinpointed Tripoli, Iowa or Tripoli, Wisconsin!
you_there;
I hope you’re joking. Here’s Wilders on Israel’s role:
