Nor it seems, have the media.
Here we have Sandbrook, writing in the EU supporting Daily Mail, pontificating about ‘the people who run Britain’, yet not mentioning the EU or how its laws have exacerbated this flooding mess. Not one word.
The EU is the embarrassing ginger-haired stepchild, never referenced, kept in the background, denied eye contact and shut away from everyone so as to pretend it doesn’t really exist. Would the media approach be any different if Farage had used two huge platforms to share the reality with people, raising public awareness? That would be speculation, but at least hundreds of thousands if not millions more people would be aware of the EU’s role as the biggest actor in this tragic play.
If Sandbrook wants to witter on about breathtaking incompetence he should pick up his pen and start by describing what he sees in the mirror. At least for once he would be accurate.
There’s much irony in that screen grab, including the typo (“on” instead of “or”).
I think the prefix “EU-supporting” should be used when referring to any UK newspaper (bar perhaps the Express titles), especially the Daily Mail, which isn’t scrutinised or criticised nearly enough for its europhilia. What a great record: supporting the Black Shirts in the 1930s and the Brussels Stuffed Shirts since the 1970s.
When writing a piece on the old EU Ref forum about in-out referendums I collected all the recent admissions in Daily Mail editorials that it supported EU membership. There were many. Like the Tory party, it is at odds with its audience.
Let’s always refer to the DM as the “EU-supporting Daily Mail” from now on.
I’ll drink to that!
Perhaps the EU part in causing nay encouraging this flooding is all part of a master plan. Anticipating the UK being a perpetual nuisance and protagonist critical of the EU project they decided the best way to be rid of us would be by drowning.
I like the elephant being replaced by the ginger haired step child makes the whole thing more British and less African!!
